AN ECO-FRIENDLY AND SWEET GELING AGENT OF OILY PHASES FOR COSMETIC APPLICATIONS

The project CARBOGEL relates on the synthesis in water of a small molecular weight carbohydrate-based gelator enabling supramolecular gelation of a wide range of organic solvents and oils, that can find applications in cosmetics among others.
Texturization of oily phases is highly requested by Industries in order to ensure spreadability and controlled applicability of final products. If many biosourced or eco-friendly hydrogelators are known, only few are commercially available for organo- or oleo-gelators. Our breakthrough innovation relies on the eco-friendly synthesis of a carbohydrate derivatives obtained in water with only one step and a simple purification step (precipitation, filtration and drying). The production was scaling up to 1 kilogram at the Laboratory and many industries are already racing to determine the application potential of this new sweet functional product. Indeed, the patented CARBOGEL product, thanks to a hierarchical self-assembly ability, enables the gelation a wide range of oily phases from fatty liquids to organic solvents of different polarity and function. Our product is easy to handle and gelation can occur in a cold process, which is by far, an outstanding advantage compared to macromolecular gelling agents. Finally, the supramolecular organo- or oleo-gels exhibit thermoreversible and thixotropic properties.
