The project Hybridimer aimed at (i) developing the self-assembly of hybrid nano-architectures made of QDs linked in a well-controlled manner to organic fluorophores or to gold nanoparticles (nanospheres and nanorods) by means of DNA strands, (ii) characterizing and investigating the nano-optical properties of these hybrid structures.
To reach our goal, we have synthesized original AgInS2 QDs, made of nontoxic heavy metals, then performed their functionalization with DNA strands and finally studied their assembly by DNA hybridization with an organic fluorophore and gold nanorods. The great advantage of our hybrid nanostructures is the precise inter-particle distance control by the rigid DNA linkers, enabling in-depth studies of FRET processes and plasmon-exciton interactions. It also allows exploring a set of applications in bio-sensing exploiting DNA hybridization.
